- With storage levels above 70 percent, the target set for November has already been reached two months earlier.
- A powerful gas infrastructure ensures reliable supply even in the winter of 2025/26.
- Kehler: “Storage facilities, LNG terminals, and our international trading partnerships allow us to enter the upcoming heating season with confidence.”
As of August 31, German gas storage facilities have surpassed the 70 percent mark on average, reaching an important target originally set for November well ahead of schedule. In addition, 80 percent of storage capacity in Germany has already been marketed, enabling the gas and hydrogen industry to look ahead to the 2025/26 heating season with confidence.
Supply security is guaranteed for the coming winter – this is the conclusion drawn by the gas and hydrogen industry in light of the current storage levels. As of September 1, the average fill level stands at more than 70 percent, with the mark surpassed on August 31. Many storage facilities are already more than 80 percent full, and the 45 percent target set for certain pore storage sites is also within reach. Furthermore, more than 80 percent of storage capacity in Germany has been marketed. For Dr. Timm Kehler, CEO of the German Gas and Hydrogen Association, these figures underscore the strength of Germany’s gas infrastructure: “High storage levels, the LNG infrastructure we have built up over recent years, and the seamless cooperation of gas traders at home and abroad give us security for the coming heating season.”
Key contributors to this success include long-term supply contracts, cooperation with international partners, continuous storage filling by trading companies, and stable imports via the new floating LNG infrastructure. Kehler added: “Our member companies ensure, through the effective interplay of market and infrastructure, that the German gas system remains a resilient and reliable pillar – even under challenging conditions.”
Since 2022, the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) has required binding minimum storage levels for gas facilities. In May 2025, the federal government adjusted these requirements through a new regulation: while cavern storage facilities and key pore storage sites in southern Germany must be filled to 80 percent by November 1, the target for other pore storage sites is set at 45 percent. This is designed to achieve an average fill level of around 70 percent.
