Uniper Expands LNG Partnership with Canada

Energy company Uniper has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian project developer Ksi Lisims LNG for long-term deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The agreement stipulates that Uniper will be able to source LNG from the planned export terminal on Canada's Pacific coast starting in the late 2020s. The aim is to further diversify European gas supplies and secure long-term sources of supply for the European market.

The Ksi Lisims LNG project is located in the province of British Columbia and is being developed by the Nisga’a Nation in partnership with Western LNG and Rockies LNG. The plans include floating LNG terminals with a total capacity of twelve million tons per year. According to the project partners, the facility will be powered entirely by renewable electricity, making it one of the lowest-emission LNG projects worldwide.

During Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to Canada in August 2025, the German-Canadian energy partnership was reaffirmed, and the expansion of joint energy and hydrogen projects was highlighted as a strategic goal. Just a few weeks ago, the energy trader SEFE also announced a long-term LNG supply agreement with Ksi Lisims LNG. The fact that now a second German energy company is investing in the Canadian project underscores the growing interest in new, geopolitically stable LNG import sources for the European market.

Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, emphasized the importance of further diversifying the company's LNG portfolio. Canada, with its extensive gas resources, political stability, and reliable regulatory framework, offers attractive conditions. Projects like Ksi Lisims LNG have the potential to strengthen the portfolio's resilience and flexibility in the long term, Lewis stated.
