New Process for Methane Upgrading Successfully Tested

Researchers at the University of Stuttgart have developed a novel process for upgrading raw biogas to methane and successfully tested it under real-world conditions. The project was funded by the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR) (Agency for Renewable Resources). The aim is to convert biogas into high-quality biomethane more efficiently and thereby unlock additional potential for grid injection.

At the core of the approach is an innovative process engineering concept that specifically converts components contained in raw biogas – in particular carbon dioxide (CO₂). Unlike conventional upgrading technologies, the CO₂ is not merely separated but methanated and thus utilized as a feedstock. This increases methane yield and improves overall plant efficiency.

By converting CO₂ into additional methane, the usable gas output increases significantly. At the same time, the demand for external hydrogen can be reduced through optimized process control. The method therefore offers both environmental and economic benefits: higher yields, lower emissions and improved profitability for existing biogas plants.

The process was demonstrated in cooperation with an agricultural partner under practical operating conditions. The results show that the technology operates reliably and can, in principle, be integrated into existing plant concepts.

Against the backdrop of increasing greenhouse gas reduction requirements in the heating, transport and industrial sectors, biomethane is gaining in importance. Technologies that enhance upgrading efficiency and unlock additional production volumes make a tangible contribution to defossilisation.

With the successful real-world demonstration, a key development milestone has been reached. The next step will be further scaling and economic optimisation to prepare the technology for broader market deployment.
