Mauritania and Möhring Energie Holding GmbH have signed a strategic framework agreement in Nouakchott for the large-scale NAYRAH project, which aims to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The project is designed as a modular power-to-x facility, with a phased expansion up to an electrolysis capacity of 1 gigawatt. In the first phase, a capacity of around 100 MW is planned. In the long term, Möhring Energie aims to produce up to 140,000 tons of green hydrogen and 400,000 tons of green ammonia per year. The project is scheduled to start in 2029.

The project will be developed on an area of around 500 km² west of Nouadhibou. For the full expansion stage, an extension to approximately 1,600 km² is envisioned. According to the company, the region offers particularly favorable solar and wind conditions.

In addition to molecule production, Möhring Energie also focuses on water- and soil-conserving approaches. The concept includes integrated seawater desalination and the use of regenerative by-products for local agricultural purposes, such as protein crops or CO₂-based e-fuels.

The signing ceremony was attended by a high-ranking German delegation led by Christoph Rauh, Director for Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The ambassadors of Germany, the EU in Mauritania, and the Mauritanian ambassador to Germany also took part.

At the ceremony, Sascha Möhring, founder and CTO of Möhring Energie, emphasized that Mauritania offers excellent wind and solar conditions for producing globally competitive green molecules. He also expressed his gratitude to the Mauritanian energy ministry for the “solution-oriented cooperation.”
